Just getting ready to go to the Cincy Beer Fest!  Should be a great time.  Must remember to pace self and drink plenty of H2O.  Looking forward to spending time with fellow BATWa members and trying great brews.  I will try to take a few notes with which to do a few reviews.  Also hope to hang out with an old friend and see if he's interested in great beer.

Mad Hatter - Deep Cover - Hop Ottin
Written by Todd

I've been doing a series of personal tastings centered around IPA's.  They are my favorite beer category and I've decided to strive for a list of good ones to seek out for my garage tap.  So I'll be making some entries and revisiting them as I may try some a second time for good measure.

Mad Hatter

Nice, tangy, smooth but a little bitter (in a good way).  A lingering fruit/citrus flavor after the initial joyous hops.  Very nice IPA and slightly on the lite side for those favoring a little more subtle IPA.  Comes from the New Holland Brewing Company, www.newhollandbrew.com BATW 7.5

Deep Cover Brown Ale

Snuck this in amoung the IPA's while tasting with our good friend Adrian.  Coming from the Left Hand Brewery.  I think this might be one I received as a gift so I'm going to be positive at first because you don't want to look a horse in the mouth and all that.  I also adore the person who gave it to me in case she reads this.  The beer looks good in the glass and it's not offensive to taste.  Now that I'm done with the good, I can't for the life of me figure out what the point of a Brown Ale is.  Maybe I'll keep trying them.  This is the second I've had in the last couple of months and I can't taste anything.  ‘Nil flavor, nil lead in, nil middle, nil after taste.  I'm going to continue to try them to see if my opinion changes but I'm going for a BATW of 3.9 right now.  www.lefthandbrewing.com  4.23% ABV

Hop Otin

Ahhh..... Here comes the hops again.  A little bitter going on here, love the hops of course!  Don't think it's going to be my favorite IPA but definetly good.  If you like IPA's I would recommend this one.  The bottle of course has the characteristic "BE...ER" (Bear/Deer) outstanding in his field!  BATW 7.0   I'll revisit this again too and adjust the review because this was the last beer of the night and might not have received it's due. www.avbc.com 7.0%ABV

Loose Cannon

I'm afraid my review on this one is a little after the original tasting but for now let me say I really enjoy this beer.  It comes from Clipper City Beer www.ccbeer.com and is part of the Heavy Seas line.  They say it has 3 pounds of hops per barrel and comes to 7.25% ABV.  As I remember quite hoppy with a nice zest and slight citrus undertone, very slight.  I also tasted a little oily characteristic I'm finding more in some of the IPA's.  I'll get some more of this and try it again.  I think Tony may have a review on this too and I look forward to reading it. BATW 9.0

Dark island

Dark Island

Over 5000 years in the making (it says that on the bottle but Ken Ham from http://www.answersingenesis.org/ might disagree).  Not to follow a rabbit trail but if you haven't been to the Creation museam I reccommend it!  I digress- Dark Island is brewed in Scotland at the Orkney Brewery in Quoyloo, which also makes the 5000 year claim.

WELCOME TO ORKNEY BREWERY

The tranquil Orkney Islands, with their fertile farming lands and fishing grounds, have been inhabited for over 5000 years. The Orkney brewery is housed in the former schoolhouse in Quoyloo 1 mile from Skara Brae in the heart of Neolithic Orkney.

I have some of my own descriptions of this beer but the website and bottle are very thorough -

 Appearance
A very dark beer with a deep ruby tint, displaying a tight, smooth, almost white head

Aroma
Chocolate, winter fruits and dried fruits, with hints of smooth roasted malt, coffee, nuts and toffee

Palate
Chocolate, coffee and roast malt flavours, giving way to warm winter fruits and a balanced, more-ish aftertaste

Key Ingredients
Chocolate malt, crystal malt and wheat give this beer its smooth, full-bodied, maltiness and sweetness; First Gold and Goldings hops combine with the malt flavours to deliver the winter fruits and dried fruits aspects

On the nose, this dark beer offers bitter chocolate, figs, toffee and hints of fruit.

On the palate, this resolves into beautiful, silky-smooth, coffee-and-chocolate flavours, followed by figs, dates and dried fruits, with a very appealing, lingering aftertaste of fruits and hop bitterness.

Just from the first impression of a glange at the bottle i was expecting something close to Mephistopheles' Stout but boy was i wrong! (obviously i knew i was wrong just from a closer bottle inspection) This beer is hand crafted in small batches, it even says and i agree, it is a robust yet exceptionally smoothe dark beer with a full - bodied malt character.

Dark Island has a 4.6 ABV so it is a smoothe easy drinking, highly reccomended beer, go have a few- enjoy.

Have a Happy New Year!  Frank

Highland Oatmeal Porter
Written by Todd

Had an Oatmeal Porter by Highland Brewery out of Asheville last night and would like to share the experience.  It poured with a light head and slightly thin porter look but definitely of the porter look.  It had a slight sweetness, touch of the oatmeal fullness, but not an overpowering porter taste.  I would recommend it for a porter for the new good beer drinker or anyone looking for a fuller winter beer but not too heavy.  I'll keep this one short and go to the BATW stamp of 6.3!  Here's a picture to let you know what to look for:

This was my first trip to San Antonio.  What made it really nice was my hotel was located right on the Riverwalk.

Harp Lager

Well, right now i might be a better movie reviewer than a Beer reviewer, Davinci Code is the movie of the day, we were talking about it in Sunday School class so i need to see it; so i digress.  Harp Lager is a great beer alone or in a Guinness.
